Two years after reports about Mahindra planning a sub-4-metre car based on the Verito sedan first surfaced, the company today took the wraps off the product – a hatchback – called the Verito Vibe. Featuring a cleverly chopped off boot that restricts the overall length to 3,991mm, the Verito Vibe falls well below the crucial 4-metre mark that entitles cars to excise duty benefits. Three variants are on offer: D2, D4 and D6, and only one engine option to begin with – the tried-and-tested 1.5-litre dCi diesel motor from Renault that produces a peak power of 65PS at 4,000rpm and 160Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. (Read : Mahindra Verito Vibe First Drive).
Styling-wise the car has a very 90s ‘vibe’ to it, fused with some smart, sporty touches such as blackened headlamps, carbon-fibre finished grille, pentagram-styled ‘Champagne’ alloys (available only on the top-end D6 variant), LED taillamps, roof racks, etc, to appeal to younger-gen buyers. The sporty treatment is carried over to the inside as well with faux carbon-fibre trim on the dash and centre console.
Space is, perhaps, the Verito Vibe’s biggest selling point and the cabin feels as roomy as the sedan. The wide backseats can accommodate three comfortably with plenty of leg-, head- and shoulder room for all. Besides, there’s also a headrest for the middle passenger, just as in the Verito. Despite the boot chopped off, it has an impressive 330 litres of storage capacity, which is more than even the Maruti Swift DZire’s 316 litres!
Most convenience features are limited only to the top-of-the-line D6 trim and comprises an air-conditioner, electrically adjustable outside rearview mirrors, 2 DIN audio player with CD/Aux-in/USB slot, rear defogger, remote door locking, central locking and more. The D6 is also the only variant to come with safety features such as ABS with EBD, and driver airbag.
ARAI mileage figures are pegged at 20.8kmpl, which is surprisingly a tad below what even the sedan variant returns (21.1kmpl). Overall, the Verito Vibe hits the sweet spot for those wanting a diesel hatch with the space of a sedan though in the end, the price may just have turned out a tad higher than anticipated.
Below is the variant-wise pricing of the Verito Vibe. Do let us in comments what you think of the pricing: high, low or just right?
