The country's leading SUV manufacturer, Mahindra has announced its plans to launch an all-new crossover vehicle for the Indian market. During the FIA Formula E championship in London, Dr. Pawan Goenka, the Executive Director of the company said that Mahindra is currently working on two new platforms, one of which is the new crossover SUV that will be based on SsangYong's X100 Tivoli, which is expected to launch in the next 14 to 16 months.
The second new platform, on the other hand, will come a year after that. Mahindra's main focus is on SUVs and the company is talking with Pininfarina to develop an entirely new product which will sell under the same brand name. However, the company has not yet revealed any other details about this project.
No concrete information has been provided about this new crossover SUV at the moment, but reports say that it will be powered by an all-new 1.5-litre petrol engine, that is also expected to be offered in the TUV300 and the NuvoSport later. The 1.6-litre diesel engine that powers the Tivoli may also be available as an option for the new compact SUV.
As far as pricing is concerned, the Tivoli is expected to be priced above Mahindra’s upcoming SUV, carrying a price tag of about Rs 15-18 lakh (ex-showroom). The crossover SUV's price will be much lower, ranging between Rs 9-12 lakh (ex-showroom). We are hoping to get more information about the vehicle soon but, as of now, it is quite clear that Mahindra and SsangYong will be sharing technology in the coming years.
