MotoGP champion aiming to return to racing in third round at Brno

Defending MotoGP champion Marc Marquez has undergone successful surgery on his right arm after fracturing his humerus bone following his crash in the season opening Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez.

After his crash on Sunday, the Repsol Honda rider was taken to Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona on Monday. Dr. Xavier Mir, who is MotoGP’s traumatology specialist, along with the surgeon at the hospital performed an open reduction and internal fixation of a titanium plate to the right humerus.

It had been feared that there was damage to Marquez’s radial nerve in the horrifying highside crash, however it was discovered that the nerve was untouched and did not need intervention.

Marquez will remain at the hospital in Barcelona for another two days and it is being reported that he aims to return to racing at the Czech Grand Prix on the August 7 to 9 weekend.

The opening round of the COVID-19 pandemic affected, 13 round (so far) season saw two other high profile crashes as Suzuki’s Alex Rins suffered a right shoulder fracture dislocation after a crash in qualifying. LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow crashed in the pre-race warm-up and suffered a fracture in the scaphoid bone in his left wrist.

Dr. Mir was reported to have operated on Crutchlow’s wrist this morning in Barcelona and the British rider plans to return to the team at Jerez on Friday for the Andalusian Grand Prix, the second round of the MotoGP season.
