From its inception to every single major incident in the company's life - here is Maruti's entire history to date

1981

February 24th: Maruti Udyog Ltd was incorporated on under the provisions of the Indian Companies ACT, 1956

1982

October 2nd: License and Joint Venture agreement signed between Maruti Udyog Ltd. & Suzuki Motor Corporation ( SMC) Japan.

-Production under the JVA was flagged off

- Maruti 800, a 796 cc hatchback, India's first affordable car

1983

December: 796 cc hatchback launched

1984

November: Omni Launched

- Installed capacity reached 40,000 units

1985

December: With the launch of Maruti Gypsy (970cc, 4WD off-road vehicle Maruti lays the foundation of India's globally competitive auto component industrial base.

- Japanese concepts adopted companywide across functions

1986

September: Produced 100,000 vehicles by (cumulative production)

1987

September: First lot of 500 cars exported to Hungary

1988

March: Installed capacity increased to 100,000 units

1990: India's first sedan, technically speaking the three box car with (1000 cc )

1991

March: Reaches cumulative indigenization of 65 percent for all vehicles produced.

1992

SMC increases its stake in Maruti to 50 per cent

1993

October: Zen (993cc, hatchback Car) is launched.

1994

November: Esteem1.3L (1298cc, 3 box car) LX launched.

1995

March: Installed capacity touched 200,000 units

1996

April: 1.5 million vehicles rolled out

May: Launch of 24-hour MOS emergency on-road vehicle service.

1997

- New Maruti 800 (796cc,hatchback Car) Standard and Deluxe

- Produced the 2 millionth vehicle since the commencement of production

1998

Records net profit of 652 crores ( 1997-98)

December: Maruti launches website as part of CRM initiatives

1999

July: Launch of Maruti - Suzuki innovative traffic beat in Delhi and Chennai as part of social initiatives.

-MSM launched as model workshop in India; achieves highest CSI rating

December: Plant 3 inaugurated; increases installed capacity to 350,000 vehicles. Baleno & Wagon R launched.

2000

March: IDTR (Institute of Driving Training and Research) launched jointly with the Delhi government to promote safe driving habits in

June: IGNOU and Maruti sign MoU as partners in satellite based distance learning

August: Altura, a luxury estate car is launched

September: Alto is launched

October: First car company in India to launch a Call Center

- Sales & Service Network spans 648 cities

2001

March: All time high monthly sales 40487 units attained

August

- Customer information centers launched in Hyderabad, B'lore and Chennai

-Zen Easy Drive introduced -

- Alto Vxi launched

September- October: MUL offers VRS to 1050 employees.

October: Versa launched Oct 2001

- Maruti True Value launched in Bangalore and Delhi

January

- Maruti Finance in Mumbai with 10 finance companies (8+2JVs) is introduced

- True value launched in Mumbai

- Children's park inaugurated in Delhi (CSR Initiative)

- Special edition of M800 is launched?

- Maruti offers warranty for 4 years ( 2+2)

- World tour on world peace on Gypsy King flagged off

May

-'Maruti Insurance' is launched , two new subsidiaries 'Maruti Insurance Distributor Services' & 'Maruti Insurance Brokers Limited"

- Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) acquires majority stake in MUL ( increases to 54.2%)

July

- Wagon R - Pride is launched

- Esteem Diesel launched and all variants upgraded

September

- M800 E1 std A/C launched (Special edition of Maruti 800, India's first color-coordinated car)

2005

April

- The fiftieth lakh car rolls out

- Growth in overall sales by 15.8%

2006

Maruti rolled out a first of its kind 'Loyalty cum Rewards Programme'for its existing and new customers

July

- Maruti launched 'Dil Se' - a special program for Indians living abroad or NRIs, to facilitate them to gift Maruti cars on line to friends and relatives back at home.

- Maruti Tied up with Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Ltd to increase availability of loans for Maruti Cars in rural and semi urban markets.

- Maruti launched WagonR, with major changes in the front, rear and the interiors.

- Maruti also launched WagonR Duo, with an approved factory-fitted LPG kit, which can run on Petrol and LPG both.

November

- Maruti signed MoU with the Haryana Government to set up an institute for driving training and research in the State.

- Maruti inaugurated a new Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) set up as a collaborative project with Delhi Government at Sarai Kale Khan in South Delhi. First IDTR managed by Maruti is located at Wazirabad.

- New Zen Estillo launched in Nov. 2006

2007

January

- Swift Diesel launched on Jan 24th. 2007

- Omni achieved one million sales landmark in January 2007.

February

- The fourth assembly line and diesel engine plant SPIL, launched at Manesar on 6th, Feb. 2007

March

- Alto becomes first car in India to cross 2 lakh domestic sales in a fiscal, achieves one lakh sales in five months flat

- UTI Bank entered into 4-wheeler financing through an alliance with Maruti Udyog Ltd.

April

-Rural Scheme for Gram Panchayat launched under the title, Ghar Ghar Mein Maruti; Mera Sapna Meri Maruti"

-Some salient points;

- Total Income of Rs 152,523 million (Net of Excise) during fiscal 2006-07, a growth of 22.2 per cent posted over last year.

- Profit Before Tax went up to Rs 22,798 million in 2006-07, a growth of 30.3 per cent over 2005-06.

- Net Profit stood at Rs 15,620 million, up 31.4 per cent over fiscal 2005-06.

- 2006-07 Maruti sold a record 674, 924 units, including exports of 39,295 units.
