First launched in 2000, Maruti Suzuki Alto has now surpassed the company’s discontinued M800 in cumulative sales. Ever since its launch, the company has sold 29,19,819 units. The M800 took 29 years to cross the 28 lakh unit milestone whereas the Alto has achieved the same feat in just 15 years. The M800 was launched in December 1983 and was pulled out of production in January 2014. However for the last four years of its life cycle, the M800 wasn’t sold in all cities with the advent of stricter BS IV norms.
Commenting on the milestone, Maruti Suzuki Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) R S Kalsi said, "Over the years, Alto has brought happiness to 29 lakh families to become India's largest selling single brand car. With its success, Alto continues to remain the first choice for personal mobility solution for Indian customers."
When the Maruti Suzuki Alto was launched, it came with an 800cc unit. The Manesar based car maker then launched a more powerful 1.0-litre Alto K10. The Alto K10 is now also available with an AMT. While the Alto might now hold the cumulative sales record, there is no denying the mark left by the M800 in the Indian market.
