Spending most of their time in commuting from home to office and vice-versa, new car buyers now look forward to buying cars with automatic transmission which allow ease of driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic and significantly reduce the driving effort.
A strong indicator of this changing preference is the fact that 3.5-3.7 lakh automatic cars were sold in the financial year 2018-19fiscal year of 2018. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, sold 1.53 lakh automatic cars in the same fiscal, a strong 65% increase from the previous year.
Maruti Suzuki leads the charge when it comes to offering automatic transmissions in its expansive line-up of cars. It offers three different types of automatic transmissions in its portfolio to choose from, namely AGS (Auto Gear Shift), CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and AT (Automatic Transmission) technology.
Auto Gear Shift (AGS)
Auto Gear Shift (AGS) is an automated manual transmission which was introduced in the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. The AGS technology has a Transmission Electronic Controller Unit that operates an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator to perform gear shifts and clutch operation. Owing to how it works, AGS ensures the convenience of automatic transmission along with the fuel efficiency that’s comparable to a manual transmission.
Many cars in the Maruti Suzuki line-up use this automatic transmission technology, including the likes of Alto K10, Celerio, WagonR, Swift, Dzire, Ignis, and Vitara Brezza.
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is an automatic transmission that does not feature a conventional gearbox. Instead, CVT uses a belt and two pulleys connected by a belt. The Transmission Electronic Controller Unit operates this hydraulic system to control the movement of one pulley. The flow of power from the engine to wheels is continuous and uninterrupted. Since the belt moves over the pulley in small steps, it allows the engine to operate in the highest possible efficiency band which helps deliver enhanced fuel efficiency. At the same time, the CVT also offers immense comfort and driving pleasure.
Maruti Suzuki offers the CVT technology in its premium hatchback, NEXA Baleno, where it is paired with the 1.2L VVT petrol engine.
Automatic Technology (AT)
The third automatic transmission that Maruti Suzuki has in its arsenal is the AT Technology. The Automatic Transmission unit is a completely automated gearbox that self-changes vehicle gear ratios, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. The AT technology uses hydraulic coupling (also known as torque converter) which transfers the power from the engine to the car’s transmission. Maruti Suzuki uses this transmission in the petrol versions of the Ertiga, Ciaz, and XL6.
In the automatic transmission, the torque converter has refined over the years. The gear shifts are relatively smooth, and most importantly, a torque converter unit is capable of handling a lot more power and torque from the engine. It is available in the Ciaz, Ertiga, and XL6 which have the 1.5-litre K15 petrol engine.
Takeaway
A point of note, Maruti Suzuki is the only Indian carmaker that has automatic transmission options across its line-up. Over the years, the company has been refining these technologies for better driveability and fuel economy
In this day and age when people are shifting to automatic transmission cars for the ease and comfort they offer in everyday driving, Maruti Suzuki has taken the lead by offering automatic technologies in different segments and budgets - that means more options for the Indian car buyers. The future of driving is definitely automatic!
