India's biggest carmaker today released a report based on a ground-level road safety study conducted in eight of the most crowded cities in India. The list of cities comprised Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai. 15 prominent locations, such as malls, bus stops, petrol pumps, tourist spots and local markets were chosen in each city and evaluated on 11 parameters pertinent to road safety. Based on the average of points awarded for each criterion, the best ones were chosen to see which one is good at what. Here’s a list of the criteria and the city that’s best at it:
Pedestrian rights – Mumbai
Road lighting and maintenance – Kolkata
Motor laws and traffic control – Mumbai
Emergency services – Chennai
Road cleanliness – Ahmedabad
Connectivity – Delhi
Road infrastructure – Delhi
Road safety – Bengaluru
Differently-abled friendly – Mumbai
Road quality – Delhi
Pollution control – Pune
Delhi and Mumbai, India's two most populated metros, bagged three awards each. The country's capital is the best at connecting places, with the smoothest roads and has the most flyovers and underpasses for vehicles to skip the traffic signals. All this is supposed to result in smoother traffic flow. It's no wonder, though, as this is the administrative capital and the ‘mantris’ expect a smooth ride. Mumbai makes life easy for people on foot and the differently-abled. The cops in the country's financial capital also got top honours for enforcing motor laws and managing the traffic.
Kolkata leads the way with the most well-lit roads of all, while Chennai makes way for the emergency services. While Ahmedabad was ranked as the best with its clean roads, it was Pune that offered its residents the most breathable air among the eight cities. Pune also has a big difference between the ratio of two-wheelers and four-wheelers, with the scales heavily in favour of two-wheelers. Motorcycles and scooters are obviously far less polluting than cars and are ideal for quickly getting one or two people to their destinations. The city also has a somewhat bearable weather for riders. Hyderabad was the only city that couldn't manage to excel in any of the parameters.
The study was conducted in partnership with Times Now television, while Nitin Gadkari, minister for road, transport and highways offered the administrative bodies to assist with the programme. The report is part of the India Road Safety Mission (IRSM), and Maruti Suzuki hopes to help local authorities, NGOs and corporates with penning down the guidelines by providing in-depth data about their cities. Over 6,000 citizens gave their feedback and participated in the research conducted over a period of three months.
