The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross was first offered in India in 2015 through the carmaker’s Nexa chain of premium dealerships. The crossover was then offered with a choice of two diesel engines - the ubiquitous 1.3-litre unit and a punchy 1.6-litre diesel engine. In 2017, Maruti gave the crossover a breath of fresh air with some mild updates. Unfortunately, the carmaker pulled the plug on the 1.6-litre diesel unit. But with Maruti deciding to phase out all its diesel engines by 2020, the S-Cross is set to lose the 1.3-litre DDiS Smart Hybrid engine soon, leaving the homegrown carmaker with no other choice than to plonk a petrol engine in the S-Cross. And according to our sources, it is likely to happen this year itself.
The petrol engine in question will be the company’s 1.5-litre K15 motor that powers the Ciaz and the updated Ertiga. This engine makes 105PS of power and 138Nm of torque and is expected to be offered with more or less the same figures. The engine also makes use of a mild hybrid system with a dual battery setup similar to the Ciaz. It will most likely be coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, an automatic transmission (which is not available at the moment) can also be expected. The engine is not BSVI-complaint yet, but expect it to be updated soon.

As far as prices are concerned, expect the petrol powered S-Cross to be cheaper than its diesel counterpart. Also, expect it to return some impressive fuel economy figures thanks to its mild hybrid system as well.
The news of Maruti Suzuki phasing out its diesel engines came as a complete surprise, but Maruti has hinted that they might also introduce a BSVI-complaint diesel engine, provided there is enough demand for the same. The in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel might make its way into the S-Cross as a result of this. The S-Cross 1.5 petrol, meanwhile, will face competition from the petrol variants of the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and Renault Captur.
