With less than three weeks left to go for the BS6 deadline, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Ford, and Toyota have cleared their inventory of BS4 cars in India. Company dealerships are exclusively taking orders for BS6 vehicles. Meanwhile, Tata and Mahindra still have BS4 cars at select dealerships. Skoda, Volkswagen, Renault, Nissan, and Datsun dealerships will continue to sell BS4 cars as well as BS6 models until the March 31 deadline. If you’re on the lookout for a BS4 car, read about our discount deals on SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, and MPVs.
Maruti Suzuki had taken the BS6 leap in April last year and has updated all of its models. In the process, all models and variants with the 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre diesel engines were discontinued. While Maruti has no BS6 diesel cars at the moment, Honda and Ford have updated their diesel engines to BS6. Toyota has jettisoned the Platinum Etios, Etios Liva, and Etios Cross. The Glanza and Yaris are already BS6-compliant.
Tata has updated its lineup to BS6, and the compliant Nexon, Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, and Harrier are already on sale. We saw the BS6 Hexa at Auto Expo 2020, indicating an imminent launch. Select Tata dealerships have limited stocks of BS4 cars.
Spy shots tell us that Mahindra has several BS6 models in the works. Since Mahindra’s all-new XUV500 and Scorpio will come to India next year, the carmaker is likely to give its cars engine-only updates.

Renault, Nissan, Datsun, Volkswagen, and Skoda dealerships still have BS4 stocks, and like Tata and Mahindra, are offering hefty discounts to incentivise sales. If you’re on the lookout for a BS4 car, read about our price deals on SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, and MPVs.
The transition to BS6 was first announced in 2016 to give carmakers and dealers a heads-up. However, given how tumultuous 2019 has been for the Indian automotive industry, we can’t blame car companies for their leftover BS4 inventories. As consumers, the news means that BS4 deals are likely to stay on until March 31. As petrolheads, we can’t help thinking about all the petrol and diesel engines we lost to the transition.
