Maruti Suzuki has an ambitious plan laid out for 2020 and the upcoming Auto Expo. This includes the petrol-powered Brezza, Futuro-E EV, Ignis facelift, BS6 models and the premium version of the Wagon R, dubbed the XL5. Of these, we have just spotted the XL5 out testing along with what appears to be the 2020 Vitara Brezza.
You may be familiar with the XL6, the Ertiga’s premium 6-seater cousin. In the same vein, the XL5 is an upmarket version of the humble Wagon R. Fun fact: Maruti Suzuki India first used the XL nomenclature for the Grand Vitara XL-7 back in 2003.
The latest spy images lend us an idea of how the front end will look. It is likely to sport a split headlamp setup with a slim grille, a design language which is prevalent in cars like the Hyundai Venue, the Tata Harrier and even the smaller Kwid. The overall silhouette remains identical to the Wagon R. There could also be minor changes to the rear (LED light guides, for example) for differentiation. The spied hatchback was also seen running on the Ignis’ 15-inch alloy wheels.
We still haven't got a glimpse of the cabin but it is highly likely to get an update with a new colour scheme. Expected features include projector headlamps, automatic climate control and automatic headlamps. Suzuki’s Smart Play audio system is most likely to be retained.
Under the hood will be the capable K12B 1.2-litre engine. In the WagonR, this motor makes 81PS of power and 113Nm of torque. Transmission options might include a 5-speed manual and an AMT.
As of now, the Wagon R retails between Rs 4.42 lakh and Rs 5.91 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Being a premium offering, the XL5 will be sold through Maruti’s Nexa chain of dealerships with a price tag to match.
