Next time your car goes in for service, pester the service manager for an update

Maruti Ciaz Dashboard

Maruti Suzuki's 'SmartPlay' infotainment system has found its way into practically every car they sell today. The touchscreen made its debut with the Maruti Ciaz way back in 2014, and has always been a user-friendly setup. With information broken into four easy-to-access quadrants and snappy touchscreen response, it was easy to get accustomed to as well.

In terms of connectivity, the system was among the first ones to provide Apple CarPlay support. While recent iterations of the same unit got an added Android Auto functionality (in the Ignis and the Swift Dzire), a big chunk of cars rolled out of the factory with just CarPlay. Good news, users of Android - Maruti has an update in place that gives the old units Android Auto compatibility.

This enables certain apps from the phone such as Google Maps and select music streaming apps to be mirrored on the car's touchscreen. It also doubles up as a notification centre, allowing you to reply on the go as well. Not to mention, since your phone is plugged into the USB, it gets its dose of charge too.

The update should be a part of the usual service for the Ertiga MPV, Ciaz, Baleno, S-Cross and the Brezza. Before you ask, the update is completely free of charge. Going forward, it is safe to assume that new batches of these cars will come with Android Auto bundled in from the factory floor.
