Another round of good news for Indian car buyers prioritising safety. After the Tata Nexon scored an impressive four out of five stars in the Global NCAP crash test, Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza has gone ahead and matched that score. Well, sort of.
The overall score for the Vitara Brezza for adult occupants was 12.51/17, which makes it worthy of four stars. For reference, the Nexon scored 13.56/17 under the same test parameters. Global NCAP says that protection offered for the front occupants’ heads and necks was good. Chest protection was rated as ‘marginal’ for the driver, and ‘good’ for the passenger. As far as the knees go, protection for both knees of the driver was deemed ‘marginal’, whereas the co-driver’s left and right knee had ‘marginal’ and ‘good’ protection respectively. Just like in the case of the Nexon, Global NCAP says the knees could get hurt due to “impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the tran fascia tube.
Notably, Global NCAP deemed the body structure of the Brezza to be ‘stable’ and ‘capable of withstanding further loading’. This means you can expect the compact SUV to be safe even if the crash speeds are higher than the test’s stipulated 64kmph.
The next big point of discussion is child safety, where the Vitara Brezza scored 17.93/49. This test was carried out with the standard 18 month-old child dummy placed in a child seat mounted on the ISOFIX mounts. In the test, protection for the head was deemed to be poor, and limited for the chest. The Nexon, on the other hand, scored 25/49 in the same test.
There’s no doubt that the awareness for safety among consumers is forcing manufacturers to make their cars safer. The fact that the government is stern about bringing even more stringent safety norms in the country is a bonus.
