Maruti Suzuki’s strategy to introduce the AMT transmission into its budget offerings has turned out to be the right move. While the Celerio was the first car to receive the AMT box, it also comes in the Alto K10 and now Maruti is readying the Wagon R and Stingray with the AMT gearbox for a festive season launch.
The Wagon R and Stingray employ the same five speed AMT unit mated to the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine. Now that production of this gearbox has commenced in India by Magneti Marelli, supply issues should be well under control. Maruti Suzuki wasn’t able to deliver enough AMT equipped cars in the recent past due to high demand and supply constraints but now with the Wagon R and Stingray, the company should now face such problems.
The Wagon R and Stingray AMTs should be priced with a Rs 30,000-40,000 premium over its manual gearbox variants, and will most likely come in VXi trim only. Expect ex-showroom Delhi prices in the range of Rs 4.7 lakh.
