Maruti Suzuki has launched the S-Cross at a starting price of Rs 8.34 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The S-Cross is a Crossover hatchback that will come with a choice of two diesel engines with no petrol motor on offer as Maruti believes that there is no market for petrol motor in a car of this segment.

The two engines in question are both Fiat Multijets tweaked to Maruti’s specifications. The base mill is the ubiquitous 1.3-litre diesel mill with a variable geometry turbocharger developing 90PS of power and 200Nm of torque, hence called the DDiS 200. It comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and has an ARAI claimed mileage figure of 23.65kmpl. The 1.3 is a popular engine and possibly the one for those looking for more efficiency. For buyers who want higher performance, the engine of choice will be the DDiS 320.

As the name suggests, its got 320Nm of torque from its 1.6-litre diesel mill and has 120PS of peak power. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the 1.6 comes with ARAI rated mileage of 22kmpl. In this class of car, the S-Cross has the highest rated torque figure which makes it an excellent long distance tourer. Maruti Suzuki is betting big on space and comfort too. There’s enough space for front and rear seat passengers and its got 353 litres of boot space. With the rear bench folded, it opens up 810 litres in the cabin.

On the features front, you get the works on the top end model. Touchscreen entertainment system, satellite navigation, push button start/stop, steering mounted controls, automatic headlamps with projector lights, keyless entry, rear camera, parking sensors, reclining rear seats, rain sensing wipers and cruise control.

This is Maruti’s first product that will be sold through their recently unveiled Nexa dealerships and aims to take the brand upmarket and Maruti expects the C and above segment to grow at a faster pace now.
