It’s first hybrid supercar underpinned by the new design will launch in 2021
  • The new carbon-fibre design architecture is built to be lighter and structurally sound, keeping the safety aspect intact.

  • It is built to accommodate hybrid powertrains but can also easily transition to fully electric ones.

  • Conceived at the McLaren Composites Technology Center in Sheffield.

Entering its second decade of supercar production, McLaren has been close to the front of the race when it comes to chassis production. The first car by the British carmaker in 2011, the 12C, featured the MonoCell chassis which was a spectacle in itself. Now, McLaren has gone even lighter with its new design architecture.

Developed, engineered, and produced at the McLaren Composites Technology Center in Sheffield, the chassis is meant to accommodate hybrid powertrains for the next generation of McLaren supercars. It was designed keeping in mind the retention of overall safety while trimming down the extra mass.

Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive said, “This new, ultra-lightweight carbon fibre chassis boasts greater structural integrity and higher levels of quality than ever before with our new MCTC facility quickly becoming recognised as a global centre of excellence in composite material science and manufacturing.”

“Our advanced expertise in light weight composites processes and manufacturing combined with our experience in cutting-edge battery technology and high-performance hybrid propulsion systems means we are ideally placed to deliver to customers levels of electrified high-performance motoring that until now have been simply unattainable,” he added
