With more than 600PS of power, could the flagship EQ Merc be a Porsche Taycan Turbo rival?
  • The current Vision EQS concept makes 470PS of power and 760Nm of torque.
  • It has a claimed range of 700km.
  • The AMG EQS may retain the EQS’s 100kWh battery.
  • If charged using DC 350kW, the EQS can juice up to 80 per cent in less than 20 minutes.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the EQS at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept electric luxury sedan with 700km range. Now, the carmaker is planning to give it a more powerful AMG variant that will rival the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S, and the upcoming Jaguar XJ electric vehicle (EV). Mercedes could give the sportier AMG EQS over 600PS of power distributed between two motors, one at each axle. The EQS is expected to be launched as a 2022 model.

The current concept EV is no slouch. It makes 470PS of power and 760Nm of torque. Mercedes claims it can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds and onto a top speed of more than 200kmph. An AMG version of the sedan would likely be quicker and faster, though it may retain the same 100kWh battery pack as the non-AMG version. Mercedes claims a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) range of up to 700km for the non-AMG, so the sportier EQS isn’t likely to put buyers off with its range numbers.

AMG Mercs are known not just for their power and straight-line speed but also their ability to handle around a racetrack. The sportier EQS is likely to get a more dynamic and possibly stiffer suspension and sticky tyres. Do we smell another Nurburgring lap record?

On the outside, the EQS looks nothing like the S-Class, though it is likely to be sold alongside the flagship internal combustion sedan. The carmaker calls it the ‘one bow’ design devoid of seams, creases, and straight lines. 188 LEDs sit on the front grille, while 229 illuminate the EQS’s rear end. Its blue pinstripe is illuminated and separates the contrast paint tones of the upper and lower halves of the car’s body.

If the exterior doesn’t give away that this Mercedes is far from production, the interior will. The carmaker says it is inspired by luxury yachts. It features a curved central touchscreen, which blends into the centre console at the bottom and floats above the dash. Spaceship steering aside, the EQS also has screens on each door-mounted armrest, a feature that may or may not make it to production. The Dinamica microfibre seats are made from recycled plastic bottles and the headliner fabric was created using oceanic plastic waste.

A new scalable platform underpins the EQS concept EV. Its wheelbase, track width, and powertrain components can be modified to fit other vehicles. Mercedes says the car’s frame is made of aluminium, steel, carbon fibre, and ‘materials made from recyclates’. The carmaker also claims that the EQS will be level 3 autonomous on the motorway and can be made fully autonomous in the future.

The current EQS show car charges to 80 per cent in less than 20 minutes if supplied 350kW of DC power. IONITY is responsible for setting up 400 charging stations powered by green energy across Europe, 100 of which are already operational.

We can’t help but compare the upcoming Mercedes-AMG EQS to the 670PS-850Nm Porsche Taycan Turbo. The more powerful EQS will also compete with the Tesla Model S P100D and the all-electric Jaguar flagship sedan. But can it be on par with the 760PS Porsche Taycan Turbo S? We can’t wait to find out.
