Lately, with the customer’s choice of fuel shifting from diesel to petrol, all the car manufacturers have been busy redefining their market strategy for India. This shift has come into the automobile industry due to the diesel ban that was imposed in Delhi-NCR for over eight months. The ban even saw Mercedes-Benz approach the Supreme Court with a plea to sell diesel-powered cars. In exchange, it agreed to pay an environmental cess on the sale of every diesel car sold.
To avoid any such problems, Mercedes-Benz has decided to offer a petrol variant across all its range of cars in India. The country’s largest luxury carmaker today completed its petrol portfolio with the launch of the GLS 400 4Matic in India. Priced at Rs 82.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), it is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that churns out 248PS of power and 480Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission that hurls the 7-seater SUV to a top speed of 240kmph.
On the occasion, Roland Folger, managing director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, “With the launch of the GLS 400 4MATIC, we have now completed our petrol portfolio for the Indian market. The introduction of the GLS 400 4MATIC is a strategic move as it gives the customers the flexibility to choose between the petrol and the diesel variants of their popular SUV. The GLS offers its occupants class leading luxury experience that no other full-size luxury SUV can match in this segment. This is also the fifth SUV variant we introduced this year, further bolstering our SUV portfolio which remains the most comprehensive in the luxury car segment. Our SUV segment has seen the maximum growth for the past two years and we are confident that this trend will continue.”
Features on the new car include a 14-speaker Harman Kardon music system that Mercedes-Benz claims every passenger in the car can experience a surround sound effect with, electronic all-wheel drive traction system, Electronic Stability Programme, Dynamic Select with five driving modes, and panoramic sun-roof. The car is available with only two colour options - Polar White and Obsidian Black.
