Mercedes Benz India is celebrating the first year of success of its hatchback models the A-Class and the B-Class in India. And to mark the occasion, it has now introduced Edition 1 versions of both cars. The Edition 1 version of the A-Class and the B-Class are priced at Rs 26.17 lakh and Rs 28.74 lakh, respectively (both ex-showroom in Mumbai) which makes them more expensive compared to the versions of the two cars on sale currently. Only 100 exclusive units of the A-Class and B-Class Edition 1 will be made by Mercedes-Benz India making these special editions very exclusive.
The A-Class and the B-Class were so far available in only two versions each - a lesser specced diesel and a fully loaded petrol version. But, Mercedes is increasingly finding that its customers would rather have a fully specced car for a higher price than a stripped down version which costs a few lakh of rupees less. The Edition 1 versions are a step in this regard. This introduction could also be seen as a move to counter the launch of the new Audi A3 set to happen in July by creating some excitement around these brands. With the Audi A3 expected to cost Rs 26 lakh, it could easily draw a healthy chunk of buyers away from the Mercedes hatchbacks.
The new Edition 1 A-Class and B-Class, meanwhile, are only available with a diesel engine and the attempt here is to try and close the gap with the petrol versions of the two cars in terms of features. Therefore, the Edition 1 versions get a panoramic sunroof, electrically powered front seats, a reversing camera and the rear passengers also finally get a central armrest with cup holders. The B-Class Edition 1 additionally features a rear seat entertainment package in line with the fact that majority of B-Classes aren't really driven by their owners.
The Mercedes Benz Edition 1 A-Class and B-Class are powered by a 2.1-litre, 4 cylinder diesel engine which powers everything diesel in the company's India line upto the ML 250 CDI. But, for the hatchbacks, the power and torque outputs are capped to 109PS and 250Nm respectively. The engine continues to be mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic that drives the front wheels. The Edition 1 versions remain unchanged mechanically in other areas as well barring the suspension. Both the A-Class and B-Class now get raised ride height and slightly more supple setup to deal with our roads better.
