Mercedes-Benz Vans has introduced a new class of vans: the T-Class. Catering to the small van segment, the T-Class is meant for private customers who want a practical and compact van for leisure, but in a package smaller than its mid-size sibling, the V-Class.

The T-Class will be based on Mercedes’ ‘Sensual Purity’ design philosophy. With the design and proportions of the T-Class, the folks at Stuttgart are hoping to appeal to families and leisure enthusiasts. “These customers seek attractive and practical compact vehicles,” says Marcus Breitschwerdt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

Do not let the term ‘van’ take any attention away from the fact that the T-Class will be very attractive, as any Mercedes should be. "With the T-class’s new layout and design we achieve a fusion of functionality and desirability", says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer, Daimler Group.

The T-Class will focus mainly on utility and comfort, with functions such as passenger transportation. Both sides will be equipped with sliding doors to allow easy ingress and egress. Expect a good deal of modularity for the interior of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz offering. It will feature conventional drive systems and a fully-electric variant.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz is represented in the small van space by the Citan, which was introduced in 2012. However, the Citan is a commercial-only offering. It was developed in cooperation with Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi. Mercedes-Benz will follow a similar route with the development for the T-Class as well. The T-Class could be powered by the 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine developed by the alliance that can be found on the A-Class and the India-spec Nissan Kicks in varying tunes.
