Mercedes-Benz has showcased its upcoming X-Class pickup truck to capture both the utilitarian and lifestyle segment. The X-Class borrows its ladder frame platform from the Nissan Navara.
The X-Class will have the following engine options:
X 200: 165PS/238Nm 2.5-litre petrol
X 220 d: 163PS/403Nm 2.3-litre diesel
X 250 d: 190PS/450Nm 2.3-litre diesel
X 350 d: 258PS/550Nm 3.0-litre V6 diesel
The two middleweight engines will serve left-hand drive as well as right-hand drive markets with either a rear-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive layout. The petrol motor will only come with a left-hand drive steering and rear-wheel drive layout for specific markets. A 6-speed manual transmission will be standard with the 4-cylinder engines while a 7-speed automatic will be available as an option for the X 250 d.
The 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive and the 7-speed automatic will be standard on the top-of-the-line X 350 d. A four-wheel drive with low range and a rear differential lock will be optional on the lower two diesel engines. It'll allow the pickup to crawl over rough terrain while also being able to haul heavy loads on the flat bed.
The three variants for the X-Class are Pure, Progressive and Power, with varying degrees of comfort and luxurious features. The Pure will be the most functional trim while the Power will target urban dwellers with rugged styling. Customisation will be an important aspect of the X-Class as the carmaker will offer an extensive list of practical and personalization accessories.
The X-Class measures 5340mm long, 1920mm wide and 1819mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3150mm. The pickup will have a towing capacity of 1650kg to 3500kg depending on the chosen powertrain. However, similar to the Ford trailer backup assist, it doesn't have a simple way to reverse the trailer. The loading bed is almost square and measures 1587mm X 1560mm X 474mm. The payload capacity is rated at 1042kg.
The X-Class comes with built-in Internet connectivity for remote telematics. It allows the vehicle to provide real-time traffic details on the 8.4-inch COMAND system and the owner to check fuel level, tyre pressure, etc. remotely. Mercedes-Benz can also assist owners with remote diagnostics, breakdown management, accident recovery and emergency call system using the dedicated SIM card.
The pickup will go on sale in Europe later this year with a starting price tag of € 37,294 (~Rs 27.4 lakh). It'll launch in more countries later, but the US is not on the list yet despite a huge demand for pickups there.
