After trying its hand (not so successfully) at the niche luxury MPV segment with the R-Class in 2011, Mercedes-Benz is all set to have another go and bring the much awaited V-Class MPV to India in January next year.
Anticipating good demand from the service and hospitality industry and large family buyers, the German luxury carmaker is looking to offer the current generation V-Class, which was launched in 2014, as a CBU in India initially. Based on the initial reception for the new V-Class, Mercedes-Benz could also localise the MPV in India as it has done with most of its models in the country.
Likely to come out with two seating configurations: six seater and seven seater - the all new MPV could prove to be a much more premium alternative to the Innova Crysta in India. Globally, the V-Class is available in three lengths: compact (4895mm), long (5140mm) and extra-long (5370mm). However, we expect Mercedes-Benz to come out with the long and extra-long variants here. In comparison, the Innova Crysta tops out at just 4735 mm in length.
All that space is utilised well inside the V-Class as it comes loaded with a host of creature comforts, including customisable seating featuring swiveling seats and even a sleeper option! It also comes loaded with safety tech such as attention assist, crosswind assist, headlight assist and tyre pressure monitoring systems. It also gets 360-degree cameras with blind spot detection and lane assist. The V-Class gets state of the art Mercedes Comand infotainment system as standard and boasts of touchscreen navigation along with topographical 3D mapping.
Under the hood, expect the V-Class to be powered by the BSVI-ready 2.0-litre diesel engine which churns out 194PS of power and a thumping 400Nm of torque. The same engine also powers the C-Class facelift, which was recently launched here. Considering that the V-Class will come to India through the CBU route initially, expect to shell out upwards of Rs 70 lakh (ex-showroom) for this luxury MPV.
