The EQS Concept is in a near-production phase.
It gets loads of chrome, huge 24-inch chrome wheels and small Mercedes-Maybach logos embedded in the headlights.
The rear end looks subtle, featuring small Maybach symbols.
The entire dashboard is made of three seamlessly integrated screens.
Built on a modular platform that will also underpin regular EQS SUV.
Launch expected in 2023.
You could be forgiven for thinking that the Mercedes-Maybach EQS Concept is a sedan. Afterall, the German carmaker already sells the EQS sedan, which is the electric equivalent of the S-Class sedan. However, the EQS Concept borne out of the Mercedes-Maybach partnership is an SUV, and it has been revealed at the 2021 IAA show in Germany, before we even got a chance to see the regular EQS SUV.
Not getting caught up in the details, let’s get right to what the Mercedes-Maybach EQS Concept is all about. A one-off, the EQS Concept is near-production ready according to the chaps at Mercedes-Maybach.
The design of the SUV is a mix of what we have seen on fully electric Merc models, and on the company’s Maybach models. It flows smoothly from the front to the rear of the car, but features distinct Maybach trademarks like bucketloads of chrome, a two-tone paint job, and those huge 24-inch alloys that have a full chrome outlook, and mimic the shape of a circular spillway in a lake. While the overall design of the SUV has been kept simple, one can’t help but notice that certain elements like the front grille (the fake front grille as it is an EV), have been given too much real estate. The rear has been kept subtle in that regard, with LED lights that are connected in the middle.
Ever so often, you get reminded that this is no ordinary Mercedes. The headlights have the little Mercedes-Maybach logos embedded in them. You’ll even find one of these logos on the C-pillar of the SUV, and ‘Maybach’ spelt out on the boot as well. A cool feature on the Mercedes-Maybach EQS Concept is that as the driver approaches the driver door, it opens automatically. The rear doors of the SUV can also be programmed to open automatically.
However, the biggest Maybach touches are reserved for the interior. Mercedes is offering three touchscreens on the dashboard that stretch from one A-pillar to another, and look like they are seamlessly integrated into one another. There is executive seating for four, a floating centre console that stretches all the way to the rear seats, a cooler for drinks, and even a flower vase to add ambience! Like any Maybach, you’ll only find the most premium of materials used inside the cabin, with a faux fur carpet being one of the highlights.
The SUV will be pinned by a modular EV architecture that will also underpin the upcoming EQS SUV from Mercedes. This SUV will go into series production in 2022, before the Maybach SUV, and is slated to have a range of 600km according to the WLTP cycle. Due to the regular EQS SUV going into production first, we expect the Maybach SUV to be launched in 2023.
