Mercedes-Benz is expected to bring an all-electric crossover concept at this year’s Paris Motor Show. The car is expected to rival the Tesla Model X when its production version sees daylight by 2019. The car could be one of the two SUVs that the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is planning to bring by 2020.
The concept is in the works at Merc’s prototype development facility in Stuttgart. The all new concept will carry a separate design theme as compared to its fossil fuel powered cars. The concept will showcase both the exterior and interior layout of the car, while the design adapted takes into consideration the unique properties of an electric vehicle (EV), which indicates that this upcoming concept will be very aerodynamic and could omit front air scoops, just like the Tesla Model 3.
Underpinnings the all new EV is reportedly a newly-developed electric vehicle platform which can be used across Merc’s upcoming EVs. However, it was reported earlier that for the starters, the EVs could share parts from the existing cars.
The brand is also looking to set its foot in the Formula E space as racing is always seen as the best way to test and improve vehicles. A senior official quoted that Mercedes is looking at Formula E with “great interest”. He also added that “Formula E provides an interesting platform for electric vehicles though it would be important for us to ensure there is a clear technology transfer to our road cars.”
