Mercedes-AMG Project One’s Engine Looks Delicious

Mercedes-AMG Project One will be the first road-legal car to be powered by a true-blue F1 engine.

In a race to become the fastest, there is a never-ending evolution of the car which keeps pushing the game to a whole new level. Currently, that game belongs to the hybrid hypercars. After the entry of Mclaren, Porsche and Ferrari, Aston Martin decided to have its own contender with the futuristic looking Valkyrie. And now, Mercedes-Benz have entered the field with the Project One. While only the rear silhouette of the supercar has been revealed so far, the German carmaker has now given us details of its drivetrain. After much anticipation, it has now been revealed that the Project One will be the first ever road car to be powered by an F1 car's hybrid engine.

Like in F1 cars, the AMG Project One will also be powered by a 1.6-litre, turbocharged V6 with an assist from batteries and motors. The Project One will get an all-wheel-drive setup with the rear wheels being powered by the V6 and the front wheels being powered by two individual motors which produce about 107PS each. The total output of the setup will be close to a whopping 1020PS! That’s 57PS more than the Ferrari LaFerrari. Since the engine operates under such high stress, it will need to be rebuilt every 50,000km.

But, it's not everything is similar to an F1 car as the Project one will only rev to about 11000rpm while idling at 4000rpm, whereas F1 cars have a peak rev range of 15000rpm. The AMG Project One will also get four times more lithium-ion battery packs compared to an F1 car which, while driving the front wheels, can power the car for 24km. These batteries are kept towards the front of the car and are placed very low in the structure which helps keep the centre of gravity low while making for ideal weight distribution as well. All this is expected to weigh around 1,300kg which will give it a pretty sweet power-to-weight ratio. Another major difference between the Project One and an F1 car will be that the Project One will have an all-wheel-drive setup whereas F1 cars’ powertrain only sends power to the rear wheels. 

Expected to cost around $3 million, the Project One will be three times more expensive than the LaFerrari. But, with the units being limited to just 275, this first-ever F1-powered road car might be worth all that moolah.
