The Hector 7-seater will take on the Mahindra XUV500 as well as the upcoming Tata Harrier 7-seater
  • The 7-seater version of the Hector has been launched in Indonesia as the Wuling Almaz.
  • The 7-seater version shares the same dimensions as the 5-seater Hector sold here.
  • Indonesia-spec model is only available with the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine.
  • India-spec model is likely to cost Rs 1 lakh more than the 5-seater version.

The MG Hector is on a roll. The response to MG’s first product in India was so high that the brand was forced to halt bookings for the SUV. Now, in a bid to make it more desirable, MG Motor will launch a 7-seater version of the Hector in 2020.

The 7-seater model has been launched in Indonesia at the GIIAS 2019. Sold as the Wuling Almaz (Wuling is part of the SAIC group which also owns MG Motor), it is priced from 263.8 million Rupiah (Rs 12.99 lakh) to 338.8 million Rupiah (Rs 16.69 lakh).

The 5-seater and 7-seater models have the same exterior dimensions which suggests that the manufacturer hasn’t modified the platform to accommodate the third row of seats. While SAIC is yet to reveal the boot space of the 7-seater variant, we are pretty sure that it will be lesser than the 5-seater model’s 587-litre boot.

Visually, both models look almost the same except for the different badges and front grille. The Almaz also misses out on the red strip that connects the tail lamps on the Hector. Inside, the only change the Almaz gets is a different horn pad with the Wuling logo.

The Almaz is also loaded with features just like its MG cousin. It comes with features like connected car tech (called Wuling Indonesian Command), a 9-speaker Infinity sound system, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), cruise control, a 7-inch multi-info display (MID) as well as steering mounted controls.

Like the Hector, the Almaz comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, disc brakes on all four wheels, electronic stability program, traction control, electric parking brake and brake assist.

The Almaz is only available with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine in Indonesia, the same is also found in the Hector and develops 140PS of power and 250Nm of torque. While both models get a 6-speed MT, the Almaz comes with a CVT unlike the DCT option offered in the Hector. For India, we expect the Hector 7-seater to also be offered with the 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine that puts out 170PS and 350Nm.

The MG Hector 7-seater is expected to be launched in India next year. We expect it to carry a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the 5-seater version, which is priced from Rs 12.18 lakh to Rs 16.88 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). When the Hector 7-seater hits our shores, it’ll take on the likes of the Tata Harrier 7-seater (Buzzard) and the Mahindra XUV500.
