In terms of size, the MG Hector is the longest in the segment and boasts the longest wheelbase as well. But when it comes to width and height, the Hector falls short of the Tata Harrier and the Mahindra XUV500 respectively. However, it has the largest boot (587 litres) in the segment and by a fair margin at that.

The top two variants of the SUV also come with MG’s i-SMART connected-car tech. Featuring an embedded SIM which is 5G-ready in its infotainment system, it is connected to the internet and offers more than 50 connected features. This allows owners to access features like calling emergency services in case of a crash, vehicle status, remote control for the sunroof, tailgate, door lock, pre-cooling the cabin and more. The infotainment system is also capable of receiving OTA -- Over The Air updates just like your smartphone.

Safety features on the Hector include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, traction control and hill hold assist. The i-SMART connected-car tech also comes with safety features like immobilising the car in case of a theft, setting a speed limit and geo fencing for when you hand over the car to the valet.

The MG Hector can be had with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel motor. The 1.5-litre petrol motor churns out 143PS of power and 250Nm of torque. It is also offered with a 48V mild-hybrid system which improves the fuel efficiency by 12 per cent, claims MG. It also provides torque boost. The 2.0-litre diesel motor, on the other hand, is from the Jeep Compass and puts out 170PS and 350Nm. While the petrol, mild-hybrid petrol and diesel come mated to a 6-speed manual, the 7-speed DCT can be had with the petrol only.

With an aggressive price tag, MG aims to take the segment by storm. The manufacturer has 120 centres across India and plans to expand that list to 250 by September 2019. The first units of the Hector will be delivered to customers on 29 June 2019. MG also wants to assure peace of mind for its customers, by offering ‘MG Shield’ which includes five free services, 24X7 Pulse hub assistance, 5 years/unlimited-km warranty and roadside assistance. There's also an assured buyback plan offered by our sister company Cardekho, where customers can trade in their Hector after 3 years  and get 60 per cent of the value back. MG also offers various service packges at an additional cost for up to five years.

The Hector competes against the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500, Hyundai Creta, Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass, and its prices make it a really tempting proposition. We have already compared these models on paper, but do stay tuned for a real-world comparison of these SUVs.
