UPDATE: The MG Hector has been launched with prices starting at Rs 12.18 lakh (ex-showroom pan India). Check out the complete pricelist and other details here.
MG Motors has unveiled the Hector SUV in India. The Hector, which is set to launch in June, will mark the beginning of the British marque’s operations in India. Head here for our first impressions of the SUV. The all-new SUV competes against the Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier and the Hyundai Tucson. With bookings set to commence in early June, the competition is about to heat up.
Under the hood of the Hector is a Fiat-sourced diesel engine that produces 170PS of power and 350Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. It’s also offered with a 1.5-litre petrol motor that churns out 143PS and 250Nm of peak torque. This motor will be offered with both the 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT). The petrol motor can also be had with a 48V mild hybrid system that promises to improve efficiency by up to 12 per cent. While the carmaker has not officially revealed the variant-wise details of the Hector, we have got our hands on the leaked brochure. The SUV will be available in four variants. Here’s a detailed insight from what we know so far and what you can expect in terms of features:
1.Style
The Style is the base-spec variant of Hector and it misses out on quite a few goodies. Starting with the engine option, the Style variant will be available with both petrol and diesel engines, but will only come with the 6-speed manual. The petrol variant also misses out on the 48V mild hybrid system.
As for the colours, the Style variant will be available in just two shades - white and silver. The Style is quite barebones in order to keep the entry-level prices of the Hector in check and make it more affordable. However, MG has claimed that it will not be as stripped down as some of its other rivals.
However, this variant does miss out the iSMART connected car features, the massive 10.4-inch touchscreen display, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), 7-inch multi-info display (MID), sunroof, mood lighting with eight colours,17-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, LED tail lamps, and a whole lot more.
Here’s a list of features that will be offered as standard on the Style variant:
Front and rear disc brakes
ABS with EBD
ESP
Vehicle stability management
Traction control
Hill hold assist
Reverse parking sensors
ORVMs with integrated LED turn indicators
Roof rails
Dual front airbags
Fabric upholstery
Four speakers
Driver armrest with storage space
Cooled glove box
Rear AC vents
Reclining rear seat
60:40 split-folding second row
Isofix child seat anchors
Two fast-charging USB ports
Vehicle stability management
Traction control
Hill hold assist
2. Super
The Super variant of the Hector is more feature loaded than the base Style. Offered with both petrol and diesel engines, this variant can also be had with a 48V mild hybrid setup with the petrol motor. As for the colours, it will be available in four shades - white, silver, burgundy, black. The red paint job that the Hector was showcased in is reserved for higher variants.
Even though this variant is a step up from the rudimentary Style, it still misses out on MG’s iSMART system and the huge array of connected features it offers. However, it does get the 10.4-inch touchscreen display. The Super variant misses out chrome accents around the grille, window line, door handles and other areas and makes do with a single-tone alloy wheel design.
The Super variant is expected to come with:
LED tail lights and rear fog lamps
10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Four speakers and two tweeters
Cruise control
Rear parking camera
3.Smart
The Smart variant does justice to its name by offering the connected car features, which is one of the most highlighted features of the Hector. iSMART can be accessed via the 10.4-inch touchscreen and a 4G SIM embedded into the SUV. It allows users to access features like emergency calls, vehicle status, remote control for the sunroof, tailgate, door lock, aircon controls, and a whole lot more.
The Smart variant will be available with both the diesel and petrol engine. The petrol motor can also be had with the DCT gearbox and 48V mild-hybrid system in this variant. It will be available in all five shades - white, silver, burgundy, black and red.
What the Smart Variant will get:
Online Navigation
iSMART
4 Airbags
8 speakers
Subwoofer
TPMS
Remote car operation
7.0-inch MID
Keyless entry
Push button start/stop
Leather upholstery
Electrically adjustable driver seat
Power adjustable and foldable ORVMs

4. Sharp
Sharp is the top-spec variant of the Hector. As expected, it will be packed with all the features one would expect from SUV from this segment. Further, it will feature some segment-first features as well. This variant can be had with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine can also be optioned with the DCT gearbox and 48V mild hybrid system.
Here’s what the Smart variant is expected to feature:
Panoramic sunroof
Six airbags (two front + two side + two curtain airbags)
Four-way electrically adjustable co-driver seat
Heated ORVMs
Rain-sensing wipers
Automatic headlights
Sunglass holder

Detailed images of the Hector have helped us trace out how it looks inside out. Meanwhile, we’ll have to wait till the launch of the SUV next month to know its prices and other details. Despite all the buzz surrounding the Hector, MG has to play the price card right if it intends to edge past its rivals in the packed mid-size SUV segment.
