MG Motor India is hard at work to bring the ZS EV, an all-electric SUV, to our shores. The carmaker will unveil this green offering on December 5 and has already set up charging stations at major cities across the country. Meanwhile, the carmaker has just launched the ZS EV in Australia at AUD 46,990, which equates to Rs 23 lakh (approx. on-road). Reports state that the ZS EV is the cheapest electric vehicle in Australia. In comparison, the Kona Electric, the ZS EV’s closest rival is priced at Rs 23.72 lakh in India (ex-showroom). Could this mean that Morris Garages (MG) will price the India-spec ZS EV to undercut the Kona Electric here?
The India-spec ZS EV has been spied undisguised and you’ll be happy to know that it looks similar to the international model. The front-end gets MG’s chrome studded grille that merges seamlessly with the projector headlamps. There is a sharp crease on the side for added character and the ZS EV gets dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, it gets LED tail lamps while the rear fog lamps are mounted on the bumper.
Inside, the ZS EV gets a simplistic dashboard that’s finished in a shade of black. Silver inserts have been applied at various places to add a dash of contrast. Just like the Hector, the ZS EV comes loaded to the gills with features. Highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, single-zone climate control, cruise control, steering-mounted audio controls, a coloured multi-info display, drive modes as well as an electric parking brake with auto hold. The India-spec ZS EV also packs a PM 2.5 AC filter to keep air quality inside the cabin in check.
Powering the ZS EV is an all-electric motor that develops 143PS and 353Nm. It draws power from a 45.2kWH battery pack that’s capable of an NEDC claimed range of 428km. It also packs fast charging facility that can charge up your battery from 0-80 per cent in 30 minutes. The Australia-spec ZS EV also gets a standard 7-year/1,60,000km warranty on its battery pack.
The ZS can also be had with internal combustion engines. Two petrol engines are offered: a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol hybrid engine and a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. The smaller engine develops 111PS and 160Nm while the bigger unit churns out 106PS and 141Nm. It’s likely we could see both these variants at the Auto Expo 2020. The ZS EV will be showcased in India on December 5 and will be launched at the Auto Expo 2020. Primary rivals for the ZS EV include the Kona Electric.
