The MG ZS EV is destined for a launch in early 2020

MG has pulled the wraps off its second offering for India, the MG ZS EV. The all-electric ZS EV is one of the select few long-range EVs in India and is destined for a launch by January 2020. Here’s a closer look at the SUV:

The ZS EV’s stance and proportions make it look more like a crossover than a full-blown SUV. It even looks sleeker and sportier than the Hector.

From the rear, the ZS EV is a smart-looking SUV with a similar footprint as its sole rival, the Kona Electric. The lower bumper design sports auxiliary lights and a faux skid plate.

The dual-tone alloy wheels are clad in 215/50 R17 Michelin rubber.

The ZS EV also gets ‘Internet Inside’ badging on the boot lid which signifies that it’s equipped with MG’s i-SMART EV 2.0 connected car technology.

The first major sign that you are dealing with a green and all-electric offering.

Now, this is how you refuel... sorry... charge the ZS EV straight through the front grille. The SUV also supports fast charging that enables it to charge up from 0-80 per cent in 50 minutes.

The ZS EV is powered by an all-electric motor that produces 143PS and 353Nm. What do all these figures do? Well, the ZS EV can sprint from 0-100kmph in 8.5 seconds!

The IP67 rated 44.5kWH battery pack is mounted flat on the floor. MG claims the ZS EV will offer a range of 340km with a fully charged battery.

It gets well appointed interiors finished in black with silver inserts. Other highlights include the 8-inch touchscreen and a PM 2.5 air filter.

Here’s a closer look of the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system showing the percentage of charge left along with the range.

Unlike the Hector, the ZS EV gets rotary knobs and physical buttons for the HVAC.

What you see here is a neatly integrated drive selector. Above that sit the selector switches for different driving modes, battery and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System).

The instrument cluster features two analogue dials and a digital MID. The dials show the speed and the percentage of power used while the MID displays various things like...

…Normal mode

...Eco mode..

..and the Sport mode.

The turbine-style aircon vents look upmarket. The ZS EV even gets electric controls for the ORVMs.

The front seats look supportive with an extended section for increased under thigh support. It also also gets electric driver's seat adjustment.

The legroom on offer seems reasonable, but the ZS EV misses out on rear AC vents.

Instead, you get a charging port and a cubby hole.

The biggest highlight inside the cabin is this dual-pane panoramic sunroof similar to the one in the Hector.

This is what 470 litres of boot space looks like.

The ZS EV will take on the Hyundai Kona Electric when launched in January, 2020. We expect it to be priced under Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). The all-electric SUV will only be available in five cities initially -- Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. MG has also installed fast chargers across these five cities.
