Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi has relaunched the Montero in India at an asking price of Rs 67.88 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). Imported via the CBU (completely built unit) route, it attracts a heavy import tax. Available only in one variant in India, the new Montero gets minor cosmetic changes over its predecessor. Bookings for the big SUV began in June 2016 with a refundable amount of Rs 10 lakh. Dealerships say that Mitsubishi will start deliveries of the Montero in the first week of December 2016.
On the outside, the new Montero gets chrome treatment on its radiator grille, new daytime running lights which are positioned near the front fog lamps, and projector headlamps. The front bumper has been redesigned, incorporating the big air dam. From the side, the Montero looks quite similar to its predecessor except the pronounced rear-wheel arches. Other updates include newly designed turn indicators integrated in the ORVMs, chrome door-handles and a fog lamp placed below the rear number plate. Tyre specifications remain the same at 265/60 R18 with 17-inch disc brakes on all four wheels.
In terms of features, the new Montero gets panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, automatic lights, keyless entry, and automatic climate control. Safety features include multi-mode ABS, EBD and dual-stage airbags, including side and curtain ones. The infotainment system features Bluetooth connectivity and GPS navigation support, and is connected to an 860-watt, 12-speaker Rockford sound system.
Powering the Montero is a 3.2-litre diesel motor that is tuned to pump out 192PS of power and 441Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed auto box and the duo sends power to a clever all-wheel drive system. It comes with four driving modes – 2H, 4H, 4HLc (4WD High range with Locked center differential) and 4LLc (4WD Low range with Locked center differential). All these modes can be operated at speeds up to 100kmph. This set-up makes the Montero a potent SUV.
Price-wise, the new Montero lands itself in the league of the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5. While the Japanese offering might not be as luxurious as its European rivals, it is surely capable of taking on the elements if the going gets tough.
