You can give Jaguar Land Rover one thing, they are doing a damn good job of creating buzz around their new line of petrol and diesel engines called Ingenium. When JLR confirmed its latest sports sedan, the XE at the Geneva Show this year, the company revealed that the Ingenium engine architecture can be configured in both transverse and in-line orientations, and will send power to the rear wheels or all-four and finally that these aluminium blocks will burn both petrol and diesel fuel.
While the XE is a year away from production, we are sure to be receiving tit-bits of information on this BMW 3-series rival including about the engine and here is the first part. JLR has revealed that for the Ingenium project, the company gave its engineers a brief to make the engines configurable and flexible, and scalable up and down the range, able to accommodate a range of powertrain layouts including rear and all wheel drive, able to support hybrid powertrains and manual and automatic transmissions.
Engineers came up with turbocharged all-aluminium blocks with 500cc cylinders to create displacements as the car and the market demands. Jaguar says that this Ingenium range of engines will have deliver class leading levels of torque, horsepower and refinement while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
To improve efficiency, ingenium engines will come with Roller bearings on cam and balancer shafts, computer-controlled variable oil pumps and water pumps, centrally offset crankshaft and electronically controlled piston cooling jets. All Ingenium engines will also have variable valve timing and start-stop technology. Jaguar further says that the diesel engine will have 17 percent less internal friction than the unit it replaces.
The XE sports sedan and the Ingenium engine is going to define the future of Jaguar and Land Rover in the coming years. JLR is on the upswing as it is growing into a serious threat to the big German three. Next year, the company steps into the big league brushing shoulders in each segment.
