Mahindra Electric, a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, unveiled a new roadmap which will lead to the development of next generation of electric vehicles. Internally referred to as Future of Mobility with EV 2.0, the homegrown auto major will make investments to ramp up manufacturing of high-end electric powertrains, battery technology motor controllers, systems integration and charging infrastructure in the country. The company says, with improved charging infrastructure, they aim to help fleet operators by making the process of charging their electric vehicles (EVs) between trips an easy affair.

Under the new roadmap, the company also expects to produce EVs with a longer range which are also capable of higher speeds. The company is also looking at developing the next generation of connected car technologies using the current system as a building block for smart mobility in upcoming smart cities across the country.

The Indian business conglomerate has always held electric mobility solutions with great regard. Back in 2010, Mahindra bought a controlling stake in the Reva Electric Car Company and renamed it Mahindra Reva which later became Mahindra Electric Mobility Limited. This not only revived the fledgeling company but also resulted in the introduction of four new vehicles in the market - the e2o and the e2o Plus, the e-Verito and the e-Supro. While the first three are aimed at personal or commercial city use, while the e-Supro was Mahindra’s first attempt at producing an electric vehicle for commercial purposes. Mahindra also claims that there are over 2,700 electric vehicles from the brand plying on Indian roads which have collectively clocked more than 40 million kilometres. While these numbers may not seem impressive at first glance, Mahindra seems confident that their past endeavours have been a step in the right direction.

The new initiative seems to be motivated by the words of Piyush Goyal, minister of state for power, coal, new and renewable energy, who had earlier said that he expects to see only electric vehicles being sold in the country by 2030. Though this seems to be a far-fetched objective, Mahindra's move certainly could help the government get closer to the objective. Not only in terms of adding new reliable EVs on our roads, but also encourage other carmakers to do the same.
