MRF, which has been manufacturing slick tyres for race-spec cars for some time now, also manages and organises the Formula Ford 1600 series motorsport events. Volkswagen track cars are reconstructed again from ground level as a high level of technology is involved in building these vehicles. Tyre performance has been a concern for the brand over the years, due to which to carmaker has decided to switch to MRF tyres.
The championship series was first inaugurated in 2010 with the Polo Cup where the cars were powered by 1.6-litre TDI engines with a manual transmission. After two years, the Polo cars were upgraded to petrol 1.2-litre TSI engine coupled to DSG gearboxes which produced higher power and torque figures. In 2015, the Polo was replaced by the Vento having a twin-charged 1.4-litre petrol engine that used both a turbo and supercharger to produce 180PS of max power.
The MMSC race track in Chennai is not JK- affiliated previously, hence with Volkswagen switching to MRF tyres, the Vento cup will now be held at three circuits viz. MMSC race track in Chennai, Kari Speedway in Coimbatore and Buddh Circuit in Greater Noida.
