The Volkswagen Beetle is possibly one of the most recognized cars in the world and even though the Beetle has seen very limited sales in India due to its high cost, it will always be an icon. The new Beetle, launched in 2011 in Europe will finally make its way to India by the end of this year. Although Volkswagen does not expect the Beetle to sell many units in India, they are insistent that the new Beetle should be a part of Volkswagen India’s portfolio so as to showcase their brand’s iconic heritage.
On the exterior front, the new Beetle will be bolder, muscular and more dynamic than ever before with its well-placed haunches and lines as compared to the very curvy second generation Beetle. The new car stays true to the Beetle form though but incorporates modern technology and design features such as daytime running lights and a set of large wheels. From the side, the pulled back windscreen looks more apt and modern and adds to the sleeker look that the new Beetle gets.
Although it is unsure as to what trim the Indian version will receive, internationally, three trim levels will be available with the Beetle – Standard, Design and Sport, each endowed with its own individual character and features along with many new optional features such as keyless access, satellite navigation systems, panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights. The choice of engine options includes a 1.2-litre TSI with 105PS, a 1.4-litre with TSI 160PS, a 2.0-litre TSI producing 200PS and 1.6-litre turbo diesel with 105 PS of peak power.
