Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off the third generation A-Class at the on-going 2012 Geneva Motor Show and by the initial looks of it, the German brand looks all set to take on the premium hatchback segment going against the Audi A3 as well as the ultra-popular Volkswagen Golf. The new A-Class gets snazzier than ever before with ultra-gorgeous lines flowing neatly from start to end helped by the diamond grille upfront adding to its charm and suave bearing. The A-class was displayed at the show in three trim levels but the Sport model on display at the Mercedes-Benz exhibit simply looked the best with its neatly crafted details and stylish bearing. The interiors too have been hugely reworked making them look extremely contemporary and clearly leagues ahead of its current rivals. It won’t be unfair to say that the interior design, quality and choice of materials give the new C-Class a run for its money with the A-Class dashboard getting pseudo-carbon-fibre treatment. Moreover, despite its new twobox body shell interior space has been improved and the new A-Class is much more spacious than its predecessor.

The new premium hatchback offering from the three-pointed star brand is powered by a variety of engine options in both petrol and diesel variants ranging from 1.6 litre to 2.0 litre engines. All variants get start/stop system as standard fitment and all the engine options get turbocharging and direct injection while transmission options include an all-new 6-speed manual gearbox or an advanced seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. As the premium hatchback segment shows promising growth on the global front, the German car-maker is aiming to target the segment with the new A-Class. Pricing will be kept competitive but with plenty options and trims to choose from, we are guessing the price range will vary significantly in comparison to its rivals. That said, the new A-Class clearly moves away from its MPV genes and adapts to the premium hatchback class while getting a lot snazzier than ever before.
