The 2 Series Gran Coupe will rival the Mercedes A Class and the Audi A3 among others

  • Will be powered by BMW’s most powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol motor in two tunes: 234PS and 310PS.
  • Shares design traits with the 1 Series hatchback along with a revised front bumper and angular headlights.
  • Interiors are expected to feature a central touchscreen, digital instrument cluster and more.
  • Will debut in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Expected production in 2020.

With the new 2 Series Gran Coupe just a few months away from its debut, BMW have now teased the sedan in its final testing phases. It’s seen wearing a camo livery with a special QR code that leads to the 2 Series Gran Coupe website.

First impressions from the teaser images show that despite the camo livery, the 2 Series Gran Coupe shares a lot of bits from the 1 Series hatchback, like its front-wheel platform. Other exterior highlights include the ever-growing kidney grille and angular headlights. The Gran Coupe also gets a redesigned front bumper with larger central and side vents.

Interior details and pictures of the 2 Series Gran Coupe haven’t been revealed yet. But we expect the sedan to feature a centrally located touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster like its elder siblings.

Under the hood, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be offered with the most powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine in BMW’s stable. It will be offered in two trims - the 228i with 234PS of power and 350Nm of torque, and the top spec M235i with 310PS of power and 449Nm of torque. Both variants will be mated to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and come with front-wheel drive as standard, and an optional xDrive AWD system as well.

Another highlight for the 2 Series Gran Coupe is a newly developed mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, which gives it a more sporty character.Other nifty driver aids include an engine traction management system, active wheel braking and the option of two driver settings - Normal and Sport - which adjusts the suspension settings and throttle sensitivity accordingly.

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2019. We expect bookings and production for the sedan to begin in 2020. There is no word yet on whether it will make it to Indian shores, but we are hopeful of some updates once the sedan is launched internationally. It will rival the likes of the Mercedes CLA and the Audi A3 sedan among others.
