Datsun in India have had a rocky start. Although the GO and its inherent platform is great, the overall appeal of both the Datsun products have been far from impressive mainly because of the barebones interior and the simple exterior design. Now though, Datsun will be showcasing a brand new hatchback which will aim at wooing the Indian and global audiences. Incidentally, this new unveil on April 14 will also be the global unveil for this new car.
The new hatchback will be based on the Datsun GoCross concept and will have the same CMF-A platform as the Renault Kwid. That said, we expect the new hatchback to not follow the Kwid’s SUVesque styling direction but instead choose a more tall-boy type stance that we see on the likes of the WagonR. That said, we do expect the Datsun family look with the large grille and the bulgy headlamps to continue on the new hatchback although in an evolutionary form as to what the likes of the GO get.
The new car will also be very spacious on the inside and considering the fact that Datsun will employ a taller stance, the new car will also have easy access to the seats. We also expect the ground clearance to be quite high considering the car will be built on the same platform that the Kwid is. That said, whether or not Datsun has decided to ditch the ‘cheap is cheerful’ attitude for the interior is a matter of waiting for the car to be launched on April 14.
In terms of mechanicals, the new hatchback will come with the same 800cc engine that you get in the Kwid and will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. And just like the Kwid, the new hatchback will also get a 1.0-litre engine and an AMT gearbox in the near future. Expect prices to be similar to that of the Kwid with the base model starting at under the Rs 3 lakh mark with the top of the line variant priced at about Rs 4 lakh.
