The Scorpio has been a vital SUV model for Mahindra, and now the company has given it a complete makeover by launching the New Mahindra Scorpio. This is one of the most anticipated car launches of 2014 and the company is betting big time on it. The New Mahindra Scorpio is a completely new model, with substantial changes not just in terms of design but even deeper under the skin. Based on an all-new ladder-on-frame platform, the new Mahindra Scorpio is said to be more agile and light on its feet.
In terms of design, the New Scorpio gets a refreshed front grille and all-new projector headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights. Also new are more muscular front and rear bumpers with new sump guards; while up front it also gets a pair of new fog lamps. The rear design of the New Mahindra Scorpio is distinguished with a rear-spoiler and a fresh set of LED tail lamps. Mahindra has kept the side profile similar to the outgoing Scorpio, but to complete the refreshed look has introduced new roof rails, body coloured door handles and wing mirrors, and new 17-inch alloys wheels, which are available in higher variants.
Plenty of changes in the interiors too, with new styling and features which make it more premium and sporty. The New Mahindra Scorpio now gets a new steering wheel with audio control buttons, a touchscreen infotainment system, new instrument cluster and the air-conditioning vents are now stacked horizontally. Depending on the variant, the New Scorpio will also come with integrated 2-DIN music system, remote central locking, sliding seats for the middle row, rear wiper and defogger.
The company claims to have improved the use of materials and also enhanced the creature comfort in the cabin of the New Scorpio. For instance, the power windows buttons have been moved from the centre console to individual doors, making it more convenient to use. You also have the option of choosing seven or nine seating configurations. The New Mahindra Scorpio will continue to use the current two diesel engines which power the outgoing model - a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder m2DiCr motor and the more powerful 2.2-litre mHawk oil-burner. However, the new Scorpio gets an all-new 320MT 5-speed manual transmission which is said to be a significant improvement over the older gearbox.
The new Scorpio is the first model to use Mahindra’s newly developed chassis, which is said to be stiffer and yet lightweight. Coupled with a revised suspension setup, the ride quality and handling dynamics of the New Mahindra Scorpio is claimed to have completely transformed for the better. New Mahindra Scorpio will be offered in six new variants - S2, S4, S6, S6 Plus, S8 and S10. The base S2 trim will be offered with the 2.5-litre m2DiCr engine, while the 2.2-litre mHawk motor will power the remaining S4, S6, S6 Plus, S8 and the S10 trims.
