10,000 bookings and counting, the reincarnation of the country’s highest selling entry level hatchback has been one of the most awaited since news broke out of its development earlier this year. Well it’s finally here and will be available to customers in three petrol and three CNG variants.
The seventh-generation Maruti 800 is now the Maruti Alto 800 and has taken 200 engineers and 4 years of development to make it a reality. So come to think of it, this could rightfully be called a newer car, now with a reworked platform offering better driving charachteristics , a recalibrated suspension setup, an improved power-to-weight equation and an ARAI certified mileage of 22.74kmpl for the gasoline powered model and 30.46 km/kg for the new Alto 800 Green (CNG), an improvement of over 13 percent compared to the outgoing Alto Green.
Speaking at the launch of the new Maruti Alto 800, Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director & CEO Maruti Suzuki India said, “The all new Alto is an expression of our gratitude to all those customers who posed deep confidence into this model. The availability of CNG variants adds to the Alto 800’s attraction. We are sure the new Maruti Alto 800 will be cherished by the value conscious customers across India.”
The new Alto (Read : New Alto 800 First Drive) is now shorter in its overall length, 3395mm instead of 3495mm as on the older model, but is wider (1490mm against 1475mm) and even stands taller (1475mm against 1460mm) on its 12-inch tubeless tyres. This coupled with a 4.6 metre turning radius makes the new car more manoeuvrable, while also providing for the safety and comfort of its passengers, who can now enjoy 15mm of extra rear legroom courtesy the scooped out back of the front seat.177 litres of boot space is a slight compromise even for vehicle of such demure, but all in all the new Alto is a clever bit of automobile architecture.
A tiny yet punchy 796cc three-pot 12-valve engine comes under the hood of the new Alto and this revised motor will now produce 48PS @ 6000rpm and 69 Nm of torque @ 3500 rpm. A 0-60 km/hr sprint will take this vehicle 6.4 seconds to complete.
Petal shaped headlamps, a chrome grille, ribbed roof, sculpted body coloured bumpers, muscular wheel arches and a smarter tail lamp assembly are all part of the ‘Wavefront’ design architecture that now better accentuates the Alto 800’s outer demeanour. The insides however have also received applause worthy upgrades. A spanking new three-spoke steering, silver accents around the cabin area and bolder door trims have made the insides of the new Alto 800 a far more exciting place to be in. Customers can also now choose from two interior colour schemes (Brown and Grey).
Vital safety features are severely lacking across variants, but a single driver airbag is available as an optional feature with top spec variant. The top-end LXi variant also gets power steering, front power windows, internally adjustable ORVMs and remote boot lid opener.
AC units and storage compartments like a front door trim map pockets are fitted as standard on the mid-LX and top-end LXi variants. Tubeless tyres, dual trip meters and bottle holders are some of the features that you will see across all variants of the new Maruti Alto 800.
Starting from a price of Rs 2.44 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base petrol variant the new Maruti Alto 800 has now been officially launched pan India, while the three CNG variants have been priced in the range of Rs 3.19 lakh - Rs 3.56 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
