The manufacturer has also divulged some interesting details about the upcoming hatchback. For starters, Maruti has confirmed that the new WagonR will be available with the 68PS/90Nm 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine as well as the 83PS/113Nm 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder engine. Further, both engines will be available with the option of a 5-speed manual as well as a 5-speed AMT. While the 1.0-litre engine will be made available in the L and V variants, the 1.2-litre motor will be offered in the V and Z variants.

There’s also new information on the safety front. The 2019 Wagon R will be based on the fifth-generation Heartect platform. Features such as a driver’s airbag and ABS with EBD will be offered as standard. Notably, in line with the upcoming safety norms, a speed alert system, driver seatbelt warning and rear parking sensors will be part of the standard equipment as well.
The top-spec version will get a new touchscreen infotainment system Maruti Suzuki likes to call the 'SmartPlay Studio'. This, the manufacturer claims, "will not just let you listen to latest music but also let you surf news, get latest updates on weather and locate eateries around". Interesting! Colour options for the 2019 new Wagon R will include Pearl Poolside Blue, Pearl Nutmeg Brown, Magma Grey, Pearl Autumn Orange, Silky Silver and Superior White.
Maruti says 51 per cent of WagonR buyers are first-time car owners. Also, repeat purchases for the WagonR are as high as 24 per cent. Will we see that number climb higher with the new version? It’d be interesting to see as the competition, in the form of the Tata Tiago, the Datsun Go and the newly launched Hyundai Santro, packs a stronger punch than ever before!
