New CarboGlide piston ring coating to provide low friction and superior wear resistance for the entire life of the engine. Read on to know more

CarboGlide is a multi-layer microstructure with a special coating composition that contains carbon, hydrogen and tungsten. The coating thickness of 10 microns is three times more than the industry leading coating at present. A company called Federal-Mogul Corporation has come up with this piston ring coating and patented it as CarboGlide. CarboGlide has a direct impact in lowering carbon emission and increasing fuel economy by reducing ring friction by as much as 20%. The CarboGlide coating is high wear resistance and is said to last the full operational life of the engine even in high performance direct injection and turbocharged engines. CarboGlide also protects the cylinder surface from scuffing and scoring.

“CarboGlide provides engine manufacturers and vehicle owners with a strong advantage over other coated rings in the market by delivering an extremely low friction coefficient, superior wear resistance and long life. Our CarboGlide-coated rings provide engine manufacturers with an immediate, cost-effective fuel economy improvement that is easy to implement. The friction-reducing, fuel-economy improvement benefits contribute also to reduce the carbon footprint of gasoline-powered vehicles,” said Senior Vice President, Federal Mogul Powertrain Energy, Rainer Jueckstock.

Several leading car manufacturers will equip their engines with Federal-Mogul’s CarboGlide coated piston rings from this year. Federal-Mogul will display their CarboGlide coated piston rings along with other leading technologies that will help reduce carbon emission, increase fuel economy and enhance vehicle safety at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.
