A lot of hype has been surrounding the launch of the Skoda Laura 2009 version and apart from the speculation on pricing; there has been a big debate as to what engines are going to be available on the new Laura.

Internationally, the new Skoda Octavia (Laura in India) is available with 6 engine options, namely 4 petrol versions and 2 diesel options. Judging by the way the Superb launch was conducted, it was expected that Skoda would introduce the new Laura with just two engine options, namely one petrol and one diesel. Speculation had it that the 2009 spec Laura would debut with the 1.4 litre TSI petrol engine and the 1.9 TDI PD engine, however Skoda?s ambitions to be top dog in the various segments that they are present in has resulted in the fact that the company is going to launch the Skoda Laura with three engine options!

The first engine option is the 1.8TSI petrol that also does duty in the Skoda Superb. Capable of generating a 160 BHP and 250Nm of torque, this engine is truly a refined piece of work and will do wonders for those who are performance oriented and still want mileage. The 1.8TSI will most probably be mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox, which goes to show the sporty nature that this car will possess.

The second two options are both diesels. The 1.9 TDI PD makes a comeback on the new Laura. This tried and tested engine that develops 105 BHP and makes 250Nm of torque is a great drive and extremely efficient. The 1.9 TDI is expected to be available with two transmission options, namely a 5 speed manual and a 6 speed DSG automatic. The other diesel option is a slightly larger 2.0 litre TDI PD engine that makes a generous 140 BHP and churns out a gut wrenching torque of 320 Nm. Again, this engine also does duty under the hood of the newly launched Superb and is expected to account for the top end of the Skoda Laura range. The 2.0 litre diesel will be mated to a 6 speed automatic DSG gearbox and performance is expected to be literally breathtaking.

There is no doubt that Skoda is going all out to make their bestseller even better value for money, and judging by the engine line up, the competition had better pull up their socks and get working on how to take on Skoda, who suddenly seem to have jumped into top gear!
