Three years into its solid presence in India’s full sized mainstream sedan segment, the Toyota Corolla Altis has not only managed to hold on to its image as a status sedan, but also successfully defended its superiority in a class of cars that is only getting better, more luxurious and even slightly more powerful. But rest assured, the shelf life of Toyota’s most economical executive sedan in the country has just gotten extended by a couple years with the launch of its new Altis.
Both the petrol and diesel versions of the new Corolla Altis’ have been reworked in the styling department, now making them each one easily distinguishable from the other. A re-designed headlamp and a smarter looking new grille are among the impactful exterior changes you will now see on the new versions of the Corolla Altis.
Where power delivery is concerned, the 1.8 litre petrol engine’s cubic capacity has been bumped up by 4cc to now make it 1798cc. The Corolla Altis petrol also now gets an advanced Dual VVT-i system that employs two separate variable timing mechanisms for the exhaust and the intake valves. This in turn churns out 140PS @ 6400 rpm and up to 173Nm of torque.
Present at the launch Mr. Michihiko Sato, Chief Engineer - Corolla Altis , Toyota Motor Corporation said “Following half a century of continuous evolution, responding to the needs of the times, the New Corolla Altis design and driving performance has been further refined to continue being a leader in its class. The contemporary styling and intelligent performance takes the experience of owning a Corolla Altis to an all new high. The New Corolla Altis represents the best of global motoring experience and also further strengthens Toyota’s commitment to the Indian market.”
New CVTi transmission for the top-end petrol version
Two new gearbox options, a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed CVTi transmission (top-end petrol version) will now replace the 5-speed manual shift that the petrol version of the Corolla Altis was previously offering its buyers. The diesel version of the Altis as always will feature the same 6-cog manual.
Overall fuel efficiency is up on both versions of the car as well – the ARAI claimed figures for the petrol car being at 15.22 kmpl and those for the diesel car at 21.45 kmpl. Also, there’s a new colour that simply looks fabulous on the Corolla Altis – a nice sparkling metallic blue!
The smartly re-worked models of the new Toyota Corolla Altis will retail for Rs 10.53 to 14.77 lakh for the petrol version and 11.46 to 14.55 lakh for the diesel version.
