Maruti Suzuki's best-selling family carrier has just gone upmarket with its new version, and priced competitively starting at Rs 3.28 lakh

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker (by a mile) has just launched the new WagonR. Emphasising the fact that despite its name, this is an all new car, Maruti has stepped on the gas and made the new WagonR a much more modern and contemporary car when contrasted with its predecessor.

The new WagonR has been launched at an introductory price of Rs 3.28 lakh for the base Lx variant, Rs 3.57 lakh for the mid-level LXi and Rs 3.81 lakh for the fully loaded VXi variant.

The new car has been fitted with Suzuki's new K10B engine, previously seen in the Maruti Suzuki A-Star. The new 998cc three-cylinder engine makes best in-class power, pegged at 68PS. The new engine has also drawn accolades for its frugal nature, and the company is claiming fuel efficiency under ideal conditions to be around 18.9 kmpl.

The 2010 WagonR is also based on a new platform which has added 40mm to its wheelbase and about 100mm to its overall length. The move has increased interior space and added to the car's practicality. The car has also received a major cosmetic surgery, and takes its predecessor?s design DNA one notch higher into the upmarket urban car territory.

Interiors of the car have been revised too, and safety features like ABS, airbags, defoggers and fog lamps have also been added in the top of the line variant. With all its changes the WagonR has certainly gone deeper into the urban car buyer's ambit, and has the likes of the Chevrolet Beat and the Hyundai i10 squarely in its sights. Talk about the tall-boy moving up the food chain!
