The Hyundai i20 Active Bids Farewell, For Now

The Hyundai i20 is getting a generation change next month and this is what the car will look like. The new i20 is more flamboyant than the car it replaces with large wedge shaped swept back headlamps taking centre stage. A small slat like grille houses the Hyundai logo with a larger trapezoidal grille below it. The front bumpers have a sporty edge with the impression of a floating lower end. Large fog lamps at the edges neatly sit in the bumper recesses.
Towards the rear, you can see a large set of tail-lamps and a wide blackened C-pillar. The blackened pillar gives it a premium look as do what seem like LED inserts in the tail-lamp cluster. In profile, the i20 seems to have grown in size and should offer better rear seat space and legroom. The boot capacity could also be considerably larger than its predecessor.
No information yet has trickled down on the engines the i20 will be powered by, but we presume the familiar set of 84PS 1.2-litre kappa petrol mated to a 5-speed gearbox and the 100PS 1.4-litre 4-speed automatic. The 90PS 1.4-litre diesel could also be carried forward but knowing that the upcoming new Honda Jazz will sport the 1.5-litre unit producing 100PS and Volkswagen has recently launched a new 1.5-litre diesel in the Polo, the i20 could also get a diesel engine update.
What we expect this time around from Hyundai is a better driving i20. Hyundai is finally beginning to get its suspension set up right for India which will not be overtly soft and we also expect a tauter chassis to go with it. The light inert steering feel should remain as Hyundais are associated with their easy city driving nature which is mainly due to effortless steering at low speeds. Being a Hyundai, expect class-leading features and high quality interior materials to be USPs of the new i20.
