2022 Mini Cooper: First Glimpse Before Wraps Come Off

Images of the new-gen Mini Cooper hatch have leaked online, suggesting an imminent global debut. Some of the classic Mini touches are there for you to see, but by and large, the carmaker has opted for comprehensive styling changes to ensure the hatch stands out from the existing model.  

The round LED headlamps and the familiar grille design mean the new-gen hatch looks similar to the current model. At the rear, the Mini Cooper gets new tail lamps (ditching the Union Jack signature) connected by a thick black strip. We expect new alloy wheels, but the overall silhouette will likely remain as is. 

 

Inside, the hatch gets a minimalistic and clean look. The digital driver’s display is now a gigantic round unit (integrated with the infotainment) on the central console, and the driver will rely on the head-up display for all the vital stats. The steering wheel is chunkier than before, while select airplane-like toggles have been retained for important functions. 

On the features front, the Mini could come with its own version of BMW’s i-Drive 8 infotainment system and the latest Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). It should also pack creature comforts like dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a branded audio system, and powered front seats.  

Powertrain options haven’t been confirmed, but we expect it to come with petrol and diesel engines (probably with mild-hybrid tech). The all-electric Cooper SE will also be available, with a plug-in hybrid version also on the cards. 

The next-gen Mini Cooper is expected to come to India soon after its global debut next year. Priced from around Rs 40 lakh onwards, the hatch will be a niche offering in the country.
