The design is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and that’s very German!

After revealing next to nothing in its previous teaser for the new Jetta, Volkswagen has now unveiled the official sketches of the next-gen saloon. At first glance, it looks like a shrunken Arteon, a fully grown sedan that VW unveiled in the first half of 2017. But look closely and you’ll find subtle differences.

The first thing that is reminiscent of the bigger Arteon is the design of the grille. Some might also see a hint of new-gen Audis in there. However, the protruding bumper, with its sporty design cues, sets the Jetta apart. The headlamp enclosures look sleeker and feature horizontally flipped C-shaped DRLs within. The dual-barrel headlights don’t seem to feature the conventional round projectors. Will Volkswagen opt for LED units over conventional projector units is one of the many questions that will be answered at the Jetta’s official debut at the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Like its predecessor, the side profile remains neat. However, it does liven up the style quotient with the aid of a strong shoulder line, which blends seamlessly into the tail lamp section. The rear end of the car looks like it has been taken of an Audi, especially the stretched, wraparound tail lamps. However, the dual exhaust outlets integrated within the rear bumper helps it look sporty.

The sketch for the interior perfectly exemplifies how Germans can integrate style with substance. That said, there is still a bit of lunacy in the equation. The centre section of the dashboard is noticeably canted towards the driver. The overall design of the dashboard is way swankier than what we’ve seen in earlier VW products. The mother company has even taken the liberty to take Audi’s Virtual Cockpit design, tweak it a little, and slap it on the Jetta. The big slab of glass features a digital instrument cluster while a massive touchscreen sits on top of the central AC vents.

Chances of Volkswagen launching the new Jetta in India are next to nil. In its previous stint, it barely troubled any of its rival sedans in the D-segment. For international markets though, the Jetta will be underpinned by the MQB platform. Besides a couple of diesel motors, the Jetta could also get the 1.4-litre TSI motor seen in various cars like the Audi A3, A4 and the Skoda Octavia. Needless to say, the company’s renowned dual-clutch transmission technology will be in the mix as well. Whether it comes with six speeds or more in its configuration, however, remains to be seen.
