The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued guidelines to reduce the waiting time for vehicles at toll plazas to below ten seconds, even at peak hours.
Now you may ask how this will work, considering most of us have experienced traffic or long lines at the toll plaza while on a road trip. Well, NHAI plans on limiting the length of the queue to 100 metres. If the line exceeds the 100m limit, NHAI has hinted at excusing toll to reduce waiting time and avoid crowding. There will be a yellow strip in each lane at the 100m mark.
Recently, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), announced plans to introduce a GPS-based tracking system for cars that will eliminate the need for toll booths. Using the data from the tracking system, the toll amount will be automatically debited from the car owner’s account at the end of the trip.
The guidelines issued by NHAI sound like an interim solution until MoRTH works on its proposed plans for next year.
