Double whammy for Japanese SUVs and luxo-barges on its way as Nissan prepares for sharpened focus on the Indian market.

As reported earlier by ZigWheels, Nissan India has renewed its India plans with the twin launch of its new Teana sedan and X-Trail SUV. While the spacious and comfortable Teana will go up against the likes of the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry, the X-Trail will be taking on 4x4 softroaders like the Mitsubishi Outlander and the recently launched Toyota Fortuner apart from the 20-lakh-SUV segment ruler, the Honda CR-V.

The focus of the Teana is clearly on comfort and luxury, with added focus on the seats and the interiors. The car also comes with some pretty interesting USPs that will set it apart from its competitors. From the oomph angle, the dual sunroofs on the new car extend right up to the passenger seats, adding to the airiness of the cabin. Another USP is the CVT transmission that has been mated with the fairly powerful 2.5-litre V6 engine ensures that the power delivery is quick yet seamless, which means the car will accelerate to pace without the passengers even knowing it. Priced at Rs 21.03 lakh for the base model and Rs 25.40 lakh for the fully loaded version with the dual sunroof and rear seat AC vents (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi), pricing is not cut-throat but easily at par with that in its class.

As for the X-Trail, the easy-to-drive yet go-anywhere appeal is expected to strike a chord with young SUV buyers looking for presence and capable offroading. With its competent all-wheel drive system and contemporary interiors, it could give a tough fight to many SUVs in its class. The X-Trail will start at Rs 20.81 lakh for the base model with manual transmission, Rs 23.18 lakh for the fully loaded manual SLX MT variant and Rs 25.08 lakh for the SLX automatic (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).

The question remains on Nissan's ability and focus to market its very well-made products with conviction in the Indian market ? something that the predecessors of both these vehicles could not see. If the company is setting up the stage for bringing in more vehicles into India, the launch of these vehicles should not be an opportunity to miss. For reviews and slideshows of both the cars
