Believe us, the car you see in the pictures is the "all-new" Terrano, prices for which start at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). We know it doesn't look any different compared to the outgoing version, and that's because it isn't. Before we get to discussing the updates, here's a look at a variant-wise price list:
XL: 9.99 lakh
XED: 9.99 lakh
XLD(O): 11.92 lakh
XVD PRE AMT: 14.20 lakh
XVD PRE: 13.60 lakh
All prices are ex-showroom Delhi
While we expected the SUV to wear a new suit with upgraded bumpers, daytime running lamps and alloy wheels, it gets none of them. Unlike the updated Duster that got a slew of cosmetic changes, the Terrano carries over the same 16-inch machine-finish alloy wheels, the trademark Nissan grille and dual-barrel headlamps. Minor upgrades come in the form of turn indicators on the (now electrically foldable) wing mirrors, and a new 'Sandstone Brown' colour scheme.
Step inside and that's when you notice the big updates. The black-beige interior has been swapped for a classier black-brown theme. Owing to this, the Terrano also gets new upholstery for the seats as well as a matching colour scheme for the door pads. Nissan has also plonked in the seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system from the Duster. While it does support navigation, it misses out on Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, both of which are fast becoming the norm in the segment.
Some more hand-me-downs from the Duster have trickled into the Terrano, key being the steering wheel with buttons for cruise control, a separate stalk behind the wheel that controls the audio and the calls, and a flip-down driver's armrest. Strangely, the facelifted Terrano misses out on automatic climate control. For an SUV that costs well over Rs 10 lakh, this does seem like a glaring omission. What's more, Nissan has also deleted rear air-conditioning from the feature list.
Engine options remain unchanged with the 104PS/145Nm 1.6-litre petrol, and the 1.5-litre diesel that's available with either 85PS/200Nm or 110PS/248Nm on tap. The more powerful diesel avatar gets an optional six-speed AMT or a six-speed MT, whereas the others have to make do with a five-speed manual gearbox. ARAI-certified fuel efficiency is rated at 13.06kmpl (Petrol-MT), 19.85kmpl (85PS Diesel), 19.64kmpl (110PS Diesel-MT), 19.61kmpl (110PS Diesel-AMT). Nissan has chosen not to equip the Terrano with all-wheel drive, which means the Duster continues to be the only compact SUV that can tackle the rough stuff.
The Japanese automaker has been conservative with the updates, which does seem justified when you consider that the Terrano sells in triple digits. With the Creta running away with top honours in the segment consistently, we think the Renault-Nissan alliance will have to dig deep into their arsenal to dethrone the Hyundai. The Renault Kaptur and the Nissan Kicks might just be the solution. Might.
